Is natural slate better than man-made slate?
Natural slate can offer distinctive appearance and long service, while fibre-cement or other man-made products can provide consistency and lower weight. Suitability depends on pitch, exposure, structure and budget.
Are clay roof tiles better than concrete tiles?
Clay and concrete both have valid uses. Clay is often chosen for appearance and colour stability; concrete can be cost-effective but is generally heavier.
Can new roof tiles be fitted onto the old battens?
Only if battens are demonstrably sound, correctly sized, properly graded and spaced for the new covering. On a full reroof, renewal is commonly the more defensible approach.
What does roofing underlay actually do?
Underlay provides a secondary barrier beneath tiles or slates, helps manage wind-driven rain and interacts with ventilation. It is not intended to replace the primary covering.
Why do roof tiles crack?
Impact, frost, foot traffic, fixing stress, movement, age and manufacturing defects can all contribute. The pattern of damage matters more than one isolated crack.
Can I change my roof from tiles to slate?

What is the minimum pitch for roof tiles?

What does headlap mean on roof tiles and slates?
Headlap is the vertical overlap between successive courses. It helps resist rain and wind and must suit the product, pitch and exposure.
Are reclaimed roof tiles worth using?
They can preserve appearance and suit repairs, but availability, hidden damage, dimensional variation and remaining life must be weighed against the saving.
What is fibre-cement slate?
Fibre-cement slate is a manufactured lightweight roofing product offering consistent size and appearance. It has its own fixing, lap, ventilation and pitch requirements.
Why do concrete roof tiles lose colour?
Surface weathering, coatings, pollution and biological growth can change appearance without necessarily making the tile unserviceable. Condition matters more than colour alone.
Do all roof tiles need mechanical fixings?
Modern specifications normally require a calculated fixing pattern, with additional restraint at perimeters and exposed zones. The exact pattern depends on system and wind loading.
Can natural and man-made slates be mixed on one roof?
It is usually difficult to achieve compatible thickness, gauge, fixing and appearance. Mixing should only follow a deliberate detail, not an improvised shortage solution.
Can solar panels damage roof tiles?

Can solar panels be fitted to a natural-slate roof?

How is roofing work handled on a listed building?
Material, detailing and appearance may require listed-building consent and conservation input. Like-for-like repair is not automatically exempt from every control.

Are spray-on roof coatings worth the money?
