Why is my loft wet with condensation?
Warm moist air may be reaching a cold roof space faster than it can disperse. Bathroom extraction, loft hatches, insulation gaps, blocked ventilation and occupancy all matter.
Does a breathable roofing membrane still need ventilation?
Sometimes. Requirements depend on membrane type, roof build-up, insulation position, moisture load and manufacturer guidance. ‘Breathable’ is not a universal exemption.
How much roof insulation do I need?
The answer depends on material conductivity, construction and the target U-value under current requirements. Thickness alone is not a specification.
Can too much loft insulation cause damp?
Insulation itself is not normally the problem, but blocking eaves ventilation, compressing material or leaving air leakage paths can increase condensation risk.
What is TLX Gold roofing insulation?
TLX Gold is a multi-foil insulation product used in specified roof build-ups. Its performance depends on installation, air spaces and the rest of the thermal design.
Why is my ceiling still cold after a new roof?
Possible causes include incomplete insulation, thermal bridging, air leakage, an unsuitable build-up or expectations beyond the contracted scope. The specification and installation both need checking.
What is a roof U-value?
A U-value measures heat flow through the complete roof construction. Lower values indicate better thermal performance, but condensation and buildability must also be checked.
Should roof insulation sit at ceiling level or rafter level?
Ceiling-level insulation creates a cold loft; rafter-level insulation can create a warm roof space. The right arrangement depends on how the loft is used and how moisture is controlled.
What is a vapour-control layer in a roof?
It limits warm moist indoor air entering colder construction layers. Its continuity at joints, penetrations and walls is as important as the sheet itself.
Should loft vents stay open during winter?
Yes, where the roof design requires them. Blocking vents to keep a loft warm can trap moisture and increase condensation on cold surfaces.
Why is mould growing on my loft timbers?
Mould normally indicates sustained surface moisture from condensation, leaks or both. Cleaning alone will not solve the moisture source.
Can recessed downlights contribute to loft condensation?
Open or poorly sealed fittings can leak warm moist air into a cold loft. They also create insulation and fire-safety complications.
Does a loft hatch need to be insulated and sealed?
Yes, it should broadly continue the ceiling's thermal and airtight layer. A cold, draughty hatch can cause heat loss and local condensation.
Can wet roof insulation simply be left to dry?
It depends on material, contamination and whether drying is genuinely possible. Saturated insulation can lose performance and keep adjacent timber wet.
What is thermal bridging at roof eaves?
It is a local path for extra heat loss where insulation becomes thin or discontinuous near walls and rafters. It can create cold internal surfaces and mould.
Do I still need ventilation when using TLX Gold?
Ventilation depends on the complete approved build-up, membrane arrangement and moisture design. A multi-foil product does not remove the need to follow system-specific requirements.
Why is my roof window leaking?
Possible causes include failed flashings, blocked drainage channels, damaged seals, condensation or poor integration with underlay and coverings.
Does installing a roof window weaken the roof?
Cutting rafters changes the load path. Correct trimming can redistribute loads, but the opening must follow structural design and the window specification.
Can I install a sun tunnel through my roof?
Usually possible where structure, route, weathering and ceiling position allow. Bends, length and condensation control affect performance.
